Straight answers
Will this affect my partner?+
Only where you hold joint debts. Your individual debts are separate from your partner's, and in most cases a solution covers your own debts alone.
What happens to my credit file?+
Formal insolvency solutions are recorded on your credit file, typically for six years. If you are already struggling with payments your file is likely affected already — resolving the debt puts you in a stronger position to rebuild.
How much debt could be written off?+
It depends entirely on your income, assets and creditor position. An IVA or Protected Trust Deed can write off a significant proportion of qualifying unsecured debt at the end of the term. We will show you a realistic figure before you commit to anything.
How long does a case last?+
Typically 5–6 years for an IVA, around 4 years for a Protected Trust Deed, and discharge after 1 year in sequestration (with contributions payable for up to 4 years).
What about my mortgage or car finance?+
Secured debts are treated separately and continue as normal. Many clients keep their home and vehicle while resolving unsecured debt through a formal solution.
Who regulates River Insolvency?+
Our insolvency practitioners are licensed and regulated by the Insolvency Practitioners Association (IPA). We are not authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority.
