Minimal Asset Process (MAP)

MAP is a simplified, lower-cost route into Scottish bankruptcy for people with modest debts, minimal assets and no meaningful surplus income.

What is the Minimal Asset Process?

MAP is a streamlined form of sequestration awarded by the Accountant in Bankruptcy. It is designed for people whose circumstances make contributions impossible, and it discharges qualifying debts after six months.

Do you meet the criteria?

The statutory tests are narrow, and they change from time to time. We check your position against the current thresholds before you apply.

  • You live in Scotland and your debts fall within the MAP limits
  • You have no surplus income available for contributions
  • You do not own land or property
  • Your total assets fall below the statutory value limit

How it differs from full sequestration

MAP has a lower application fee, no trustee-managed contributions and a shorter route to discharge. If your circumstances improve materially, full sequestration or a Protected Trust Deed may be the better fit instead.

What it affects

MAP appears on the Register of Insolvencies and on your credit file for six years. Some bank accounts and credit products may be restricted during the process.
